Eco Features

Since its inception in 2003, One World Backpackers has been committed to reducing its impact on the environment by incorporating environmentally friendly features in the house and garden and by constantly seeking new ways and means to improve its processes. We have paid particular attention to the climatic and environmental factors that influence Perth, especially those resulting from the long hot summers and the severe water shortages we face annually.

Solar Hot Water Systems

A state of the art solar hot water system has been installed that takes advantage of Perth’s Mediterranean climate enabling us to rely on the sun for much of the year to provide us with steaming hot water. The standby gas boosters are only used on cloudy days to heat  the water supply. This significantly reduces our contribution to greenhouse gases.

Water Saving Systems

To reduce water consumption by over 50% both inside and outside the house, we have fitted all showers, taps and toilets with AAA water usage ratings - the highest ratings available.  Also a pump, connected to the ring main, constantly circulates hot water around the building so that there is a shorter waiting time for hot water, thus ensuring minimal water is wasted.

The front garden is landscaped with predominantly native Australian plants that are suited to the climate requiring minimal watering. Irrigation is provided by a water efficient 'dripper' system and the garden is fully mulched, reducing water loss through evaporation.

Recycling Programmes

We recycle all used glass, plastics, metals and paper through our weekly recycling bin collections.  We also recycle clothing and camping equipment free of charge. Our worm farms and composting bins further help by turning the  food scraps and paper waste  into wonderful soils and mulches for the gardens, where we also grow fresh herbs and vegetables for our guests.

Cleaning

Most cleaning products used at One World are made onsite by us from all natural ingredients. Tea tree, lavender or eucalyptus oils mixed with water, baking soda, vinegar, lemon juice and salt make up most of our cleaning products. Where chemical cleaning products are used, we ensure they are bio-degradable and phosphorous free. Cleaning products that rely on fibre technology and water are widely used.
